Geography & context
Lagouira (الكويرة), or La Güera, is a locality at the extreme southern tip of Morocco, in the Dakhla-Oued Ed-Dahab region, on the Cap Blanc peninsula facing Mauritania. Located at roughly 20.9° north latitude and 17.0° west longitude, it is one of the southernmost points of the Kingdom, on the edge of the Atlantic. A former colonial trading post now almost deserted, Lagouira has a mild coastal desert climate and stands out for prayer times of near-tropical stability.
History & religious heritage
Lagouira (La Güera) was founded as a Spanish trading post in the early 20th century, on the Cap Blanc peninsula shared with neighbouring Mauritania. Long a small fishing port, the locality is today largely abandoned, but remains a striking geographic landmark at the far south of the territory. The religious practice of the region follows the Maliki rite, within the Hassani culture of the Sahara.
Religious life in Lagouira
The religious life of Lagouira sits, as across the whole great South, within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Hassani culture of the Sahara. In this extreme, sparsely populated tip, the religious reference remains that of the Moroccan Maliki rite, with the attachment to prayer and the Quran characteristic of the Saharan populations.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Lagouira follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
At a latitude of about 20.9° N, well south of the Tropic of Cancer, Lagouira has prayer times of near-tropical stability: the length of the day hardly varies with the seasons. Unlike northern Morocco, summer barely lengthens the evenings and winter barely shortens the days. Its position far to the west makes sunsets late by the clock. The switch to standard time during Ramadan shifts all the times by about an hour. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
