Geography & context
Akhfennir (اخفنير) is a small coastal town of southern Morocco, in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, on the road linking Tan-Tan to Tarfaya. Located at roughly 28.10° north latitude and 12.05° west longitude, between ocean and desert, it has a mild, windy coastal desert climate. A neighbour of the Khenifiss national park and the Naila lagoon, Akhfennir sees its low latitude give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Akhfennir is a staging town and fishing village of the Saharan coast, on the N1. Close to the Khenifiss national park, which shelters the Naila lagoon and a rich birdlife, it lives from fishing and through-traffic. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within the Hassani culture of the Sahara.
Religious life in Akhfennir
Religious life in Akhfennir sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Hassani culture of the Sahara. The town's grand mosque brings together fishermen, residents and travellers for the daily and Friday prayers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Akhfennir follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The coastal position and low latitude (~28.1° N) give Akhfennir prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under a mild climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:45 and Maghrib around 18:20; in summer, Fajr falls around 05:30 and Isha around 21:45–22:10 depending on the method. Located far to the west, the town has late sunsets by the clock. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
