Geography & context
Tarfaya (طرفاية) is an Atlantic coastal town of southern Morocco, in the Laâyoune-Sakia El Hamra region, at Cape Juby, facing the Canary Islands. Located at roughly 27.94° north latitude and 12.92° west longitude, on the ocean's edge and the desert, it has a mild, windy coastal desert climate: moderate temperatures, frequent fog. Famous for its airmail past and its former Cape Juby, Tarfaya sees its low latitude give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tarfaya, the former Cape Juby, was a stopover of the Aéropostale airmail line: the writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry ran the air staging post here in the late 1920s, an experience that inspired his work. Long under Spanish administration, the town today lives from fishing. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within the Hassani culture of the Sahara.
Religious life in Tarfaia
Religious life in Tarfaya sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Hassani culture of the Sahara. The town's mosques set the rhythm of daily life for its fishermen and residents. The Friday prayer draws a large crowd. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear names evoking mercy or antiquity.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tarfaya follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The coastal position and low latitude (~27.9° N) give Tarfaya prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under a mild climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:45 and Maghrib around 18:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 05:35 and Isha around 21:45–22:10 depending on the method. Located far to the west, the town has late sunsets by the clock, over the Atlantic. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.

Tarfaya has several mosques. Here are some of the most notable.
