Geography & context
Azilal (أزيلال) is a mountain town in central Morocco, a provincial seat in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region. Located at roughly 31.96° north latitude and 6.58° west longitude, at about 1,400 metres of altitude on the foothills of the central High Atlas, it has a mountain climate: cold winters, summers tempered by altitude. A gateway to the Ouzoud waterfalls and the Aït Bouguemez valley, Azilal sees its altitude and latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Azilal is a recent town, which became the seat of an Amazigh province of the central High Atlas long devoted to pastoralism and mountain agriculture. Its growth is tied to administration and nature tourism, the province being home to the famous Ouzoud waterfalls and the Aït Bouguemez valley. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Berber cultural setting.
Religious life in Azilal
Religious life in Azilal combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the High Atlas. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life, and the Friday prayer brings together town residents and villagers from the valleys. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the names of Amazigh places, such as Aït Ouzoud, or recall the Idrisid dynasty (the Adarissa).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Azilal follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 1,400 metres and the mid-range latitude (~32.0° N) give Azilal prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:50–22:20 depending on the method. The High Atlas relief surrounding the town can slightly advance the impression of the sun setting behind the ridges. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
