Geography & context
Fquih Ben Salah (الفقيه بن صالح) is an inland city of Morocco, a provincial seat in the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, at the heart of the irrigated Tadla plain. Located at roughly 32.50° north latitude and 6.69° west longitude, at about 400 metres of altitude, it has a semi-arid continental climate: hot summers, cool winters. A major agricultural centre thanks to the irrigation of the Tadla (citrus, sugar beet, livestock), the city sees its mid-range latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Fquih Ben Salah takes its name from a local religious scholar ('the faqih son of Salah'), a sign of the city's rootedness in the tradition of Islamic teaching. It developed in the 20th century with the irrigation of the Tadla plain, becoming a major agricultural hub of the Kingdom before rising to provincial-seat status. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Fquih Ben Salah
Religious life in Fquih Ben Salah sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Tadla, carried by a network of neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers, merchants and city residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the name of a rightly-guided caliph, such as Othman ibn Affan, or evoke divine attributes and virtues, such as mercy or repentance.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Fquih Ben Salah follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mid-range latitude (~32.5° N) and the moderate altitude give Fquih Ben Salah prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, under often strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:50–22:20 depending on the method. The open Tadla plain offers a clear horizon towards the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
