Geography & context
Bab Berred (باب برد) is a small mountain town of the central Rif, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region (province of Chefchaouen), on the road linking Chefchaouen to Ketama. Located at roughly 35.00° north latitude and 4.88° west longitude, at mid-altitude among the Rif forests, it has a mountain climate: cold, humid winters, cool summers. Its name means 'the gate of the cold' in reference to its highland climate; Bab Berred sees its high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Bab Berred is a Rif mountain town, in Ghomara country, long devoted to pastoralism, the forest and mountain agriculture. A stopover town on the road of the Rif heights, it keeps a strong Amazigh identity. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Bab berred
Religious life in Bab Berred combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. The mosque of the centre, the mosque dedicated to Imam Malik and the douar mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan, often lived in the cold of the mountains, keeps a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Bab Berred follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The high latitude (~35.0° N) and the mountain altitude give Bab Berred prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:05–22:30 depending on the method. The wooded Rif relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
