Geography & context
El Jebha (الجبهة) is a small Mediterranean fishing port of the central Rif, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region (province of Chefchaouen), halfway between Tétouan and Al Hoceïma. Located at roughly 35.21° north latitude and 4.67° west longitude, where the Rif mountains fall into the sea, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers, mild and humid winters. An isolated fishing village in Ghomara country, El Jebha sees its high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
El Jebha is a fishing port nestled at the foot of the Rif mountains, in the land of the Ghomara. Long hard to reach, it lives essentially from fishing and keeps a strong Amazigh identity. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Jebha
Religious life in El Jebha combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Ghomara Berber identity. The grand mosque and the hamlet mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together fishermen and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension, typical of the isolated villages of the Rif coast.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in El Jebha follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the high latitude (~35.2° N) give El Jebha prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:35; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:05–22:30 depending on the method. Located in the east, the locality has slightly earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west, and the Rif relief plunging into the sea frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
