Geography & context
Ketama (كتامة), whose centre is Issaguen, is a high-mountain town of the central Rif, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region (province of Al Hoceïma). Located at roughly 34.92° north latitude and 4.57° west longitude, at over 1,500 metres of altitude at the foot of Jbel Tidiquin, the highest peak of the Rif, it has a mountain climate: cold, snowy winters, cool summers. Surrounded by cedar and pine forests, Ketama sees its altitude and latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ketama is the heart of a high-mountain region of the central Rif, populated by Amazigh tribes and covered in cedar forests. Long isolated, it lives from pastoralism, the forest and mountain agriculture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Ketama
Religious life in Ketama combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. The mosques of Issaguen and the mountain douars set the rhythm of daily life, several bearing Amazigh names. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan, often lived in the cold and sometimes the snow, keeps a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ketama follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. In the high mountains, crescent observation can, on some evenings, be hindered by clouds clinging to the peaks. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude above 1,500 metres and the high latitude (~34.9° N) give Ketama prayer times with a strong seasonal swing, under a harsh climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:35, often in the snow; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:05–22:30 depending on the method. The high Rif peaks, including Jbel Tidiquin, frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
In Ketama (Issaguen), religious life is organised around the mosques of the centre and the mountain douars. Here are the most notable.
The main mosque of Issaguen, the centre of Ketama, the religious heart of the region.
The 'An-Nour' (light) mosque of the Tamloukit area, with an Amazigh name.
