Geography & context
Bouizakarne (بويزكارن) is a small crossroads town of southern Morocco, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region, where the Anti-Atlas opens onto the gates of the desert. Located at roughly 29.17° north latitude and 9.73° west longitude, amid palm groves, it has an arid climate: hot summers, mild winters. A rural market at the crossing of the roads to Guelmim, Tata and Ifni, Bouizakarne sees its low latitude give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Bouizakarne is a crossroads town of the southern Anti-Atlas, long a stop on the roads linking the Souss, the desert and the coast. In Chleuh country (Aït Baamrane), it keeps an old mosque where the Quran was studied. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Bouizakarne
Religious life in Bouizakarne combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Chleuh Amazigh identity. The town mosque and the douar mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together merchants, farmers and travellers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. The old mosque, with its kuttab, keeps the memory of traditional religious teaching.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Bouizakarne follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~29.2° N) gives Bouizakarne prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 18:00; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. Located in the west and south, the town has late sunsets by the clock. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
