Geography & context
Zag (زاك) is an oasis town of the far south of Morocco, in the Guelmim-Oued Noun region (province of Assa-Zag), at the edges of the Sahara. Located at roughly 28.03° north latitude and 9.30° west longitude, in a desert palm grove, it has an arid desert climate: scorching summers, mild winters. A remote oasis of Hassani culture, Zag sees its low latitude give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Zag is an isolated oasis of the great South, long tied to the Saharan caravans and the way of life of the Hassani populations. Its palm grove and its ksar make it a stop in the desert. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within the Hassani culture of the Sahara.
Religious life in Zag
Religious life in Zag sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition and the Hassani culture of the Sahara. The central mosque and the oasis mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together the oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Zag follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~28.0° N) and the desert climate give Zag prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under extreme summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:55 and Isha around 21:45–22:10 depending on the method. The clear desert sky keeps the solar markers very sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Zag is organised around its central mosque and the oasis mosques.
