Geography & context
Tissint (تيسينت) is a small oasis town of southern Morocco, in the Bani valley, on the edge of the Sahara. Located at roughly 29.90° north latitude and 7.32° west longitude, in a palm grove, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: scorching summers, mild winters. An oasis of ksour with a spring and a zawiya, Tissint sees its low latitude give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tissint is an oasis of the Bani valley, known for its spring, its earthen ksour and its Tijaniyya zawiya. An old stop on the southern tracks, it preserves a living oasis and religious heritage. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, tinged with Sufi Tijaniyya tradition.
Religious life in Tissint
Religious life in Tissint combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the influence of the Tijaniyya brotherhood, present through its zawiya. The town mosque and the ksour mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together the oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tissint follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~29.9° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Tissint prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:45 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The clear pre-Saharan sky keeps the solar markers sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
