Geography & context
El Borouj (البروج) is a small inland town of Morocco, in the province of Settat (Casablanca-Settat region), at the heart of the Chaouia plain. Located at roughly 32.50° north latitude and 7.19° west longitude, in a cereal-plain zone, it has a semi-arid continental climate: hot, dry summers, cool winters. An agricultural town and rural market, El Borouj sees its mid-range latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
El Borouj is a locality of the Chaouia plain, long devoted to cereal farming and livestock, structured around its souk and its farmland. Its development remains closely tied to the surrounding rural world. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in El Borouj
Religious life in El Borouj sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Chaouia, carried by the grand mosque and neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and townspeople. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the names of prophets, such as Ibrahim or Souleymane.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in El Borouj follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mid-range latitude (~32.5° N) gives El Borouj prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, under often strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:25 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The open plain offers a clear horizon towards the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
