Geography & context
Lgara (لقرعة), also called El Gara, is a small town of the Chaouia plain, in the province of Berrechid (Casablanca-Settat region). Located at roughly 33.28° north latitude and 7.23° west longitude, in a cereal-plain zone, it has a semi-arid climate with an oceanic influence: hot summers, mild winters. An agricultural town and rural market between Berrechid and Ben Ahmed, Lgara sees its mid-range latitude give its prayer times a moderate seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Lgara (El Gara) is a locality of the Chaouia plain, long tied to cereal farming and rural markets. Its development remains that of an agricultural town of central Morocco. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Lgara
Religious life in Lgara sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Chaouia, carried by the Friday mosque and a few neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and townspeople. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension, typical of the rural world.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Lgara follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mid-range latitude (~33.3° N) and the relative proximity of the Atlantic give Lgara prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:30 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The open plain offers a clear horizon towards the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Religious life in Lgara is organised around its Friday mosque and a few neighbourhood mosques.
