Geography & context
Aïn El Aouda (عين العودة) is a town south of Rabat, in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, at the edge of the Maâmora forest and the Zaër plateau. Located at roughly 33.80° north latitude and 6.79° west longitude, it has a Mediterranean climate with an oceanic influence: mild, humid winters, temperate summers. A fast-growing satellite town of the Rabat conurbation, Aïn El Aouda sees its mid-range latitude give its prayer times a moderate seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Aïn El Aouda, long an agricultural town at the edge of the Maâmora, has undergone strong growth as a satellite town of Rabat and Témara. Its recent development is tied to the residential expansion of the capital. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Aïn El Aouda
Religious life in Aïn El Aouda sits within the Moroccan Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by neighbourhood mosques accompanying the town's growth. The Friday prayer brings together a growing population of families and commuters to Rabat. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the names of figures of Islam, such as Aisha.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Aïn El Aouda follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mid-range latitude (~33.8° N) and the proximity of the Atlantic give Aïn El Aouda prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, close to those of Rabat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:25 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The Maâmora forest borders the horizon to the east. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
