Geography & context
Oulmès (ولماس) is a small mountain town of the central plateau, in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, at the edges of the Middle Atlas and the Zaian country. Located at roughly 33.43° north latitude and 6.00° west longitude, at about 1,250 metres of altitude, it has a mountain climate: cold winters, cool summers. World-famous for its mineral water, Oulmès sees its altitude and latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Oulmès is renowned for its naturally sparkling mineral springs and its thermal waters, exploited since the early 20th century, which have made its name known well beyond Morocco. An Amazigh town of the high plateaus, it also lives from pastoralism and mountain agriculture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Oualmas
Religious life in Oulmès combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the high plateaus. The central Hassan II mosque and the neighbourhood mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and herders. Ramadan, often lived in the cold of the altitude, keeps a strong communal dimension. One mosque bears the name At-Taqwa (piety).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Oulmès follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 1,250 metres and the latitude (~33.4° N) give Oulmès prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The plateau and Middle Atlas relief frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
