Geography & context
Tiflet (تيفلت) is a town of the Moroccan central plateau, in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, on the axis linking Rabat to Meknès, in Zemmour Amazigh country. Located at roughly 33.89° north latitude and 6.32° west longitude, at about 350 metres of altitude, it has a temperate continental climate: cool, humid winters, hot summers. An agricultural and commercial crossroads town of the Zemmour, Tiflet sees its mid-range latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Tiflet developed in the 20th century as a stopover town on the road from Rabat to Meknès, at the heart of the Zemmour Amazigh country. A market town turned city, it lives from plateau agriculture and transit trade. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh cultural setting.
Religious life in Tiflet
Religious life in Tiflet combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Zemmour Amazigh identity. The grand mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and farmers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke Jerusalem (Al-Qods) or the Prophet's companions.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tiflet follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mid-range latitude (~33.9° N) and the plateau altitude give Tiflet prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The open plateau offers a clear horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
