Geography & context
Arbaoua (عرباوة) is a small town of the northern Gharb plain, in the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region, on the edges of the pre-Rif hills, on the old Rabat–Tanger axis. Located at roughly 34.90° north latitude and 5.95° west longitude, between plain and hills, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. A former border locality between the French and Spanish zones of the protectorate, Arbaoua sees its high latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Arbaoua was, in the protectorate era, a border post between the French zone and the Spanish zone of Morocco, on the road from Rabat to Tanger. An agricultural town of the northern Gharb, it has kept this role as a stopover town. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Arbaoua
Religious life in Arbaoua sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Gharb, carried by a network of neighbourhood and douar mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke divine mercy (Ar-Rahma, Ar-Rahman).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Arbaoua follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The high latitude (~34.9° N) gives Arbaoua prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 22:05–22:30 depending on the method. The plain and the first pre-Rif hills frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
