Geography & context
Martil (مرتيل) is a Mediterranean seaside town of northern Morocco, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, at the mouth of the Martil river, very close to Tétouan. Located at roughly 35.62° north latitude and 5.28° west longitude, on the Mediterranean coast, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers tempered by the sea, mild winters. A former port of Tétouan turned seaside resort, Martil sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Martil was long the port of Tétouan, at the mouth of the river of the same name, and a point of maritime activity (once corsair) on the Mediterranean. It transformed in the 20th century into a prized seaside resort, with its long beach and its corniche. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Martil
Religious life in Martil sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the north, carried by a network of neighbourhood and seafront mosques. The Friday prayer brings together residents and summer visitors. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. The large Mohammed V mosque is among the main places of prayer.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Martil follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.6° N) give Martil prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:10–22:35 depending on the method. The Mediterranean horizon and the river mouth offer a sharp marker for Maghrib. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.

Martil has several mosques, in the town and along the corniche. Here are some of the most notable.
