Geography & context
Ouazzane (وزان) is a holy town in the hills of the pre-Rif, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, north of Fès. Located at roughly 34.80° north latitude and 5.58° west longitude, at about 600 metres of altitude on the slopes of Jbel Bou Hellal, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. The heart of the Ouazzania brotherhood and renowned for its olive oil, Ouazzane sees its high latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ouazzane is one of Morocco's holy towns: it was founded in the 17th century around the zawiya of Moulay Abdellah Cherif, the origin of the powerful Ouazzania (also called Taybiyya) Sufi brotherhood. The chorfa of Ouazzane played a great spiritual and political role in the north of the country. The town is also renowned for its olive oil and its weaving. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, strongly tinged with the Sufi tradition.
Religious life in Ouazzan
Religious life in Ouazzane is inseparable from its zawiya and the shrine of its founding saint, which draw many pilgrims each year. The mosque of the Ouazzania zawiya, the grand mosque and the neighbourhood mosques set the rhythm of religious life. The Friday prayer and the moussems take on a particular intensity here. One mosque bears the name of the companion Abdellah ibn Massoud, a great connoisseur of the Quran.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ouazzane follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 600 metres and the high latitude (~34.8° N) give Ouazzane prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The pre-Rif hills surrounding the town frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
