Geography & context
Oued Laou (واد لاو) is a Mediterranean seaside village of northern Morocco, in the Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma region, at the mouth of the Oued Laou, south of Tétouan. Located at roughly 35.45° north latitude and 5.09° west longitude, where the Rif mountains meet the sea, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers tempered by the sea, mild winters. A fishing village turned summer resort, in Ghomara country, Oued Laou sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Oued Laou is a fishing village at the mouth of the river of the same name, in the land of the Ghomara, a Berber tribe of the western Rif. Its beach and its setting — the Rif plunging into the Mediterranean — have made it a prized summer destination. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Oued laou
Religious life in Oued Laou combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Ghomara Amazigh identity. The central mosque and the douar mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together fishermen, residents and summer visitors. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Oued Laou follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.5° N) give Oued Laou prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:05–22:30 depending on the method. Located in the east, the locality has slightly earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west, and the Rif relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
