Geography & context
Zemamra (الزمامرة) is a small agricultural town of the Doukkala plain, in the province of Sidi Bennour (Casablanca-Settat region). Located at roughly 32.62° north latitude and 8.71° west longitude, in a fertile plain zone near the Atlantic, it has a semi-arid climate with an oceanic influence: hot summers tempered by the sea, mild winters. A rural market of the Doukkala, Zemamra sees its moderate latitude give its prayer times a moderate seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Zemamra is a locality of the Doukkala plain, a cereal- and vegetable-growing region of the Atlantic coast. Its growth is tied to agriculture and the rural markets that structure life in the Doukkala. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Zemamra
Religious life in Zemamra sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Doukkala, carried by the Friday mosque and neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and townspeople. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke renewal (An-Nahda) or divine mercy (Ar-Rahman).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Zemamra follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The moderate latitude (~32.6° N) and the proximity of the Atlantic give Zemamra prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:35 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The open Doukkala plain offers a clear horizon towards the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
