Geography & context
Aknoul (أكنول) is a small mountain town of the eastern Rif, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Taza). Located at roughly 34.65° north latitude and 3.86° west longitude, on the Rif heights, it has a Mediterranean mountain climate: cold, humid winters, mild summers. A Rifian Amazigh town away from the main routes, Aknoul sees its high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Aknoul is a Rif Amazigh locality, long devoted to pastoralism and mountain agriculture. As across the whole Rif, the Berber identity (Tarifit) is strong, even in the mosque names: 'tamezgida' means 'mosque' in Rifian. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Aknoul
Religious life in Aknoul combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. Several mosques bear the Rifian word 'tamezgida'. The Friday prayer brings together residents and mountain villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Aknoul follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The high latitude (~34.7° N) and the altitude give Aknoul prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:35; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. Located in the east, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west, and the Rif relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
