Geography & context
El Menzel (المنزل) is a small Middle Atlas town, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Sefrou), south-east of Fès. Located at roughly 33.83° north latitude and 4.55° west longitude, at the foot of the relief, it has a continental climate: cool winters, hot summers. An Amazigh town (Aït Youssi) of the Middle Atlas valleys, El Menzel sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
El Menzel ('the dwelling, the stopover') is a mountain town of the Aït Youssi country, long devoted to pastoralism and valley agriculture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in El Menzel
Religious life in El Menzel sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, in an Amazigh setting. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. One mosque is dedicated to Khadija, the Prophet's first wife and the first believer.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in El Menzel follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~33.8° N) and the altitude give El Menzel prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The Middle Atlas relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
