Geography & context
Imouzzer Kandar (إموزار كندر) is a mountain town of the Middle Atlas, in the Fès-Meknès region, between Fès and Ifrane. Located at roughly 33.73° north latitude and 5.01° west longitude, at about 1,350 metres of altitude on the Kandar plateau, it has a mountain climate: cold, sometimes snowy winters, cool summers. Renowned for its apple orchards, its caves and its nearby lakes, Imouzzer Kandar sees its altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Imouzzer Kandar ('the little waterfalls' in Amazigh) is a highland resort of the Middle Atlas, valued for its summer coolness and its plateau landscapes. An Amazigh town (Aït Seghrouchen), it is famous for its apple festival and for the nearby lakes (dayas). Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Imouzar Kandar
Religious life in Imouzzer Kandar combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Middle Atlas. The mosque of the centre and a network of neighbourhood mosques — several bearing the Amazigh word 'tamezguida' — set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and summer visitors. Ramadan is lived, in the cold of the altitude, with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Imouzzer Kandar follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 1,350 metres and the latitude (~33.7° N) give Imouzzer Kandar prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:40, sometimes in the snow; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:20 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Kandar plateau and the Middle Atlas relief frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
