Geography & context
Karia Ba Mohamed (قرية با محمد) is a small town of the Ouergha valley, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Taounate), north of Fès. Located at roughly 34.42° north latitude and 5.79° west longitude, in an agricultural plain zone of the pre-Rif, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. A market town of the Hayaïna country, Karia Ba Mohamed sees its fairly high latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Karia Ba Mohamed is an agricultural town of the Ouergha valley, long structured around its market and its cereal and olive lands. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Karia Ba Mohamed
Religious life in Karia Ba Mohamed sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the pre-Rif countryside. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the names of local families, such as Oulad Larbi.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Karia Ba Mohamed follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The fairly high latitude (~34.4° N) gives Karia Ba Mohamed prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The open Ouergha valley offers a clear horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
