Geography & context
Ifrane (إفران) is a mountain town of the Middle Atlas, in the Fès-Meknès region. Located at roughly 33.53° north latitude and 5.11° west longitude, at about 1,665 metres of altitude in the heart of cedar forests, it has a harsh mountain climate: cold, snowy winters, cool summers. Nicknamed 'the Switzerland of Morocco' and renowned as a winter-sports resort, Ifrane sees its altitude and latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ifrane is a recent town, created in the 1930s as a high-altitude resort amid the cedars of the Middle Atlas. Its steep-roofed architecture, designed for the snow, contrasts with the rest of Morocco. The town has been home since 1995 to Al Akhawayn University, a renowned institution, and remains a prized holiday spot. The region is also that of the Barbary macaques and the great forest massifs. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, common to all of Morocco.
Religious life in Ifrane
Religious life in Ifrane sits within the Moroccan Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by the mosques of the town and the university campus. The Friday prayer brings together residents, students and families of the region. Ramadan, often lived in the cold of the altitude, keeps a strong communal dimension. The mosque of the Al Akhawayn campus is one of the town's best-known religious landmarks.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ifrane follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. In the mountains, crescent observation can, on some winter evenings, be hindered by clouds clinging to the peaks. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 1,665 metres and the mid-range latitude (~33.5° N) give Ifrane prayer times with a marked seasonal swing, under a harsh climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:35, often in the snow; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The wooded ridges of the Middle Atlas surrounding the town can slightly advance the impression of the sun setting behind the relief. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Ifrane has several mosques, from the Al Akhawayn campus mosque to the places of prayer in the town. Here are some of the most notable.
