Geography & context
Akka (أقا) is an oasis town of southern Morocco, in the Bani valley, in the Souss-Massa region (province of Tata), at the edges of the Sahara. Located at roughly 29.39° north latitude and 8.26° west longitude, in a palm grove, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: burning summers, mild winters, irrigated palm groves. A former caravan stop renowned for its rock engravings, Akka sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Akka is an old oasis of the Bani valley, long a stop for the trans-Saharan caravans linking Morocco to the Sahel. Its earthen ksour and rock engravings testify to very ancient occupation. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh and Saharan setting.
Religious life in Akka
Religious life in Akka sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the south, carried by the grand mosque and the ksour mosques of the palm grove. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension, typical of the southern oases.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Akka follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~29.4° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Akka prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under intense summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The clear pre-Saharan sky keeps the solar markers very sharp over the palm grove. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Akka is organised around its grand mosque and the ksour mosques of the oasis.
