Geography & context
Fam El Hisn (فم الحصن) is a small oasis town of southern Morocco, in the Bani valley, in the Souss-Massa region (province of Tata), at the gates of the Sahara. Located at roughly 29.01° north latitude and 8.89° west longitude, in a palm grove backing onto the Bani relief, it has an arid pre-Saharan climate: burning summers, mild winters. Its name ('the mouth of the fortress') evokes a gap in the mountain. Fam El Hisn sees its very low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Fam El Hisn is an oasis of the Bani valley, at a gap ('fam') in the relief, long tied to the caravans and the agriculture of the palm groves. An outpost at the edges of the desert, it keeps a traditional earthen habitat. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh and Saharan setting.
Religious life in Fam El Hisn
Religious life in Fam El Hisn sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the south, carried by the grand mosque and the oasis mosques. The Friday prayer brings together residents and travellers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension, typical of the southern oases. One mosque bears the name Al-Ghofran (divine forgiveness).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Fam El Hisn follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The very low latitude (~29.0° N) and the pre-Saharan climate give Fam El Hisn prayer times with a small seasonal swing, under intense summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:55 and Isha around 21:50–22:10 depending on the method. The clear desert sky keeps the solar markers very sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
