Geography & context
Biougra (بيوكرى) is an agricultural town of the Chtouka plain, a provincial seat (Chtouka-Aït Baha) in the Souss-Massa region, south of Agadir. Located at roughly 30.22° north latitude and 9.37° west longitude, in an irrigated coastal plain, it has a semi-arid climate with an oceanic influence: hot summers tempered by the sea, mild winters. A great basin of greenhouse crops for export, Biougra sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Biougra is the centre of the Chtouka plain, one of Morocco's main zones of intensive agriculture (tomatoes, citrus, early vegetables grown under greenhouses for the European export market). Now a provincial seat, it embodies the agri-industrial rise of the Souss. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a Chleuh setting.
Religious life in Biougra
Religious life in Biougra combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Chleuh Amazigh identity of the Chtouka. A network of neighbourhood mosques sets the rhythm of a fast-growing town. The Friday prayer brings together farmers, workers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke success (Al-Falah), victory (An-Nasr) or light.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Biougra follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~30.2° N) and the oceanic influence give Biougra prayer times with a limited seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 18:00; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Chtouka plain and the proximity of the Atlantic give late sunsets by the clock. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
