Geography & context
Oulad Teima (أولاد تايمة) is an agricultural town of the Souss plain, in the Souss-Massa region (province of Taroudant), on the axis linking Agadir to Taroudant. Located at roughly 30.39° north latitude and 9.22° west longitude, in an irrigated plain, it has a hot semi-arid climate: very hot summers, mild winters. A major hub for citrus and early vegetables, Oulad Teima sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Oulad Teima developed in the 20th century with the rise of irrigated agriculture in the Souss plain, becoming a major producer of citrus, tomatoes and early vegetables for export. A young, dynamic town, it is closely tied to this agricultural vocation. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a Chleuh setting.
Religious life in Oulad Teima
Religious life in Oulad Teima combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Chleuh Amazigh identity of the Souss. A dense network of neighbourhood mosques sets the rhythm of a fast-growing town. The Friday prayer brings together farmers, workers and merchants. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke peace, light or the olive tree.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Oulad Teima follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~30.4° N) gives Oulad Teima prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 18:00; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The open Souss plain and the proximity of the Atlantic give late sunsets by the clock. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
