Geography & context
Taliouine (تالوين) is a mountain town between the High Atlas and the Anti-Atlas, in the Souss-Massa region (province of Taroudant), on the upper Souss valley. Located at roughly 30.53° north latitude and 7.93° west longitude, at about 950 metres of altitude, it has a semi-arid mountain climate: cool winters, hot summers. The world capital of Moroccan saffron, Taliouine sees its altitude and latitude give its prayer times a fairly marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Taliouine is world-famous as Morocco's saffron capital: the crocus fields of the surrounding mountains supply most of the national production, celebrated each autumn by a great moussem. The town is overlooked by a kasbah linked to the Glaoua family. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a marked Chleuh setting.
Religious life in Taliouine
Religious life in Taliouine combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Chleuh Amazigh identity. The mosque of the centre and the douar mosques set the rhythm of daily life, to the rhythm of the farming seasons and the saffron harvest. The Friday prayer brings together residents and growers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Taliouine follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The altitude of about 950 metres and the latitude (~30.5° N) give Taliouine prayer times with a fairly marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The High Atlas and Anti-Atlas relief framing the valley border the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Taliouine is organised around its central mosque and the douar mosques. Here are the most notable.
The main mosque of the centre, the religious heart of the saffron capital.
The mosque of Taguergouste, with an Amazigh name, on the N10.
