Geography & context
Ben Guerir (بن جرير) is a town of the Rehamna plain, a provincial seat in the Marrakech-Safi region, north of Marrakech. Located at roughly 32.23° north latitude and 7.94° west longitude, in a steppe plain, it has a semi-arid climate: very hot summers, mild winters. A town undergoing transformation, home to Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and a green-city project, Ben Guerir sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Ben Guerir, long a garrison and stopover town on the Marrakech–Casablanca axis, has recently undergone spectacular growth with the arrival of Mohammed VI Polytechnic University and the 'green city' project built around phosphates. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Bengrire
Religious life in Ben Guerir sits within the Moroccan Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by neighbourhood mosques and by the university campus mosque. The Friday prayer brings together residents, students and workers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. One mosque bears the name Al-Farouk, the nickname of the caliph Omar.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ben Guerir follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~32.2° N) gives Ben Guerir prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:35 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Rehamna steppe plain offers an open horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
