Geography & context
Sidi Ghanem (سيدي غانم) is the large industrial district of Marrakech, in the Marrakech-Safi region, north-west of the ochre city. Located at roughly 31.66° north latitude and 8.03° west longitude, in the Haouz plain, it has the semi-arid climate of Marrakech: scorching summers, mild winters. A zone of workshops, businesses and design showrooms, Sidi Ghanem shares Marrakech's prayer times, with a small seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Sidi Ghanem developed as the main industrial zone of Marrakech, gathering workshops, factories and, more recently, decoration and design showrooms that have made it a prized creative district. Attached to the great ochre city, it shares its history and religious setting. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Sidi Ghanem
Religious life in Sidi Ghanem sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of Marrakech, carried by neighbourhood mosques that, at prayer times, welcome the zone's workers, craftsmen and employees. The Friday prayer brings together a large working population. Ramadan is lived, as across all of Marrakech, with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Sidi Ghanem follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.6° N) gives Sidi Ghanem, like Marrakech, prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. Its times are identical to those of Marrakech. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
