Geography & context
Oualidia (الوليدية) is a seaside village on Morocco's Atlantic coast, in the Marrakech-Safi region, between El Jadida and Safi. Located at roughly 32.73° north latitude and 9.03° west longitude, on the edge of a sheltered lagoon, it has a mild oceanic climate: temperate summers, gentle winters. Famous for its oysters and its lagoon, Oualidia sees its coastal position give its prayer times a limited seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Oualidia owes its name to the Saadian sultan El Oualid, who had a kasbah built there in the 17th century to watch over the coast. Long a fishing village, the locality has become a resort renowned for its lagoon and its oyster farming. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Oualidia
Religious life in Oualidia sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by the kasbah mosque and the village mosques. The Friday prayer brings together fishermen, oyster farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Oualidia follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Atlantic coastal position and moderate latitude (~32.7° N) give Oualidia prayer times with a limited seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:55; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The ocean horizon and the lagoon offer a sharp marker for Maghrib. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Oualidia is organised around its kasbah mosque and the village mosques. Here are the most notable.
A mosque tied to the kasbah built by the Saadian sultan El Oualid, the historic heart of the village.
A mosque in the Hyout El Kahia area, one of Oualidia's places of prayer.
