Geography & context
El Kelâa des Sraghna (قلعة السراغنة) is a town of the Haouz plain, a provincial seat in the Marrakech-Safi region, north-east of Marrakech. Located at roughly 32.05° north latitude and 7.41° west longitude, in an irrigated agricultural plain, it has a semi-arid climate: very hot summers, mild winters. Renowned for its olive and apricot trees, El Kelâa des Sraghna sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
El Kelâa des Sraghna ('the fortress of the Sraghna', after the local tribe) is an agricultural town of the Haouz plain, renowned for its olive oil and its orchards. The region is marked by the presence of zawiyas and saints, such as nearby Sidi Rahal. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Kelâat Esraghna
Religious life in El Kelâa des Sraghna sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Haouz, carried by a network of neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear names evoking peace (As-Salam).
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in El Kelâa des Sraghna follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~32.0° N) gives El Kelâa des Sraghna prayer times with a moderate seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:35 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The open Haouz plain offers a clear horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
