Geography & context
Kettara (الكطارة) is a village of the Haouz plain, north of Marrakech, in the Marrakech-Safi region, on the road to Safi. Located at roughly 31.73° north latitude and 8.08° west longitude, in a semi-arid plain, it has a hot, dry climate: scorching summers, mild winters. Its name evokes the 'khettaras', the traditional underground galleries that captured water to irrigate the region. Kettara sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Kettara takes its name from the khettaras, the ingenious underground irrigation systems that, for centuries, brought groundwater to the crops of the Haouz. An agricultural village north of Marrakech, it carries on this hydraulic heritage. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Kettara
Religious life in Kettara sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Haouz, carried by the village mosque. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension, typical of the plain villages.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Kettara follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.7° N) gives Kettara prayer times with a limited seasonal swing, under strong summer heat. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:30 and Maghrib around 17:50; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:40 and Isha around 21:55–22:20 depending on the method. The Haouz plain offers an open horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
