Geography & context
Tamanar (تمنار) is a town in the foothills of the western High Atlas, in the Marrakech-Safi region (province of Essaouira), on the coastal road from Essaouira to Agadir. Located at roughly 31.00° north latitude and 9.68° west longitude, in the heart of the argan country, it has a semi-arid climate with an oceanic influence: hot summers tempered by the sea, mild winters. An Amazigh (Chleuh) town renowned for its argan oil, Tamanar sees its low latitude limit the seasonal swing of its prayer times.
History & religious heritage
Tamanar is an Amazigh (Chleuh) locality at the heart of the argan country, between Essaouira and Agadir. Its argan-oil cooperatives and rural markets structure local life, in a landscape of argan groves where the famous tree-climbing goats graze. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Tamanar
Religious life in Tamanar combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Chleuh Amazigh identity. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life, several bearing Amazigh names. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal and family dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Tamanar follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The low latitude (~31.0° N) and the oceanic influence give Tamanar prayer times with a limited seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:35 and Maghrib around 18:00; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:50 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. In the west of the country, the town has late sunsets by the clock. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Tamanar has several mosques, in the town and the argan-grove douars. Here are the most notable.
