Geography & context
Bouârfa (بوعرفة) is a town of the high plateaus of the Oriental, in the province of Figuig, in the far east of Morocco. Located at roughly 32.53° north latitude and 1.96° west longitude, at about 1,100 metres of altitude in a semi-desert steppe zone, it has an arid continental climate: cold winters, very hot summers. A former mining town (manganese) and rail terminus, Bouârfa sees its eastern position and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Bouârfa developed in the 20th century as a mining centre (manganese) and terminus of the south-eastern railway, at the heart of the steppe high plateaus of the Oriental. A foothold on the great semi-desert expanses, it lives from pastoralism, services and trade. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Bouâarfa
Religious life in Bouârfa sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the grand mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together herders, employees and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques evoke the Sunna, solidarity or the Almoravid victory of Zallaqa.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Bouârfa follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~32.5° N), the altitude of about 1,100 metres and the eastern position give Bouârfa prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:15 and Maghrib around 17:25; in summer, under intense heat, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the far east, the town has some of the earliest sunrises and sunsets in the country, over an open steppe horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Bouârfa has several neighbourhood mosques. Here are some of the most notable.
