Geography & context
Debdou (دبدو) is a small historic mountain town of the Oriental, in the province of Taourirt, on the slopes of Jbel Debdou. Located at roughly 33.98° north latitude and 3.04° west longitude, at mid-altitude amid springs and forests, it has a continental mountain climate: cool winters, hot summers. Renowned for its past and its former Andalusian Jewish community, Debdou sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Debdou is an old city of the Oriental mountains, long a refuge and crossroads, notably for a large Jewish community of Andalusian origin established after 1492. Overlooked by a kasbah and watered by springs, it keeps a singular heritage. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Debdou
Religious life in Debdou sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the mosque of the historic kasbah and the town's mosques. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers from the surroundings. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. One mosque bears the name of the companion Saad ibn Muadh, chief of the Ansar.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Debdou follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~34.0° N), the mountain altitude and the eastern position give Debdou prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The relief surrounding the town frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Debdou is organised around the mosque of its historic kasbah and its neighbourhood mosques. Here are the most notable.
The mosque of the historic kasbah, the religious heart of the old mountain city.
A mosque dedicated to Saad ibn Muadh, chief of the Aws tribe and an eminent Ansar companion of the Prophet.
