Geography & context
Bouânane (بوعنان) is a small oasis town of the high plateaus of the Oriental, in the province of Figuig, along the Guir river, at the edges of the desert. Located at roughly 32.04° north latitude and 3.05° west longitude, in a pre-Saharan zone, it has an arid climate: cool winters, scorching summers. A ksar and palm grove of the Guir valley, Bouânane sees its latitude and desert climate give its prayer times sharp solar markers.
History & religious heritage
Bouânane is an oasis of the Guir valley, organised around a ksar and a palm grove, long tied to the caravans and the agriculture of the pre-Saharan valleys. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh and Saharan setting.
Religious life in Bouanane
Religious life in Bouânane sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the central mosque and the ksar mosque. The Friday prayer brings together oasis residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension, typical of the south-eastern oases.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Bouânane follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~32.0° N) and the desert climate give Bouânane prayer times with sharp solar markers, with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, under extreme heat, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. The clear pre-Saharan sky keeps the horizon very sharp. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
