Geography & context
Driouch (الدريوش) is a small town of the eastern Rif, a provincial seat in the Oriental region. Located at roughly 34.98° north latitude and 3.40° west longitude, on the Rif hills, it has a Mediterranean mountain climate: cool, humid winters, hot summers. A Rifian Amazigh town turned provincial seat, Driouch sees its high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Driouch is a town of the eastern Rif, in Amazigh country, made a provincial seat in 2009. Long a farming and market town of the Rif hills, it keeps a strong Berber identity. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Driouech
Religious life in Driouch combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. The grand mosque ('tamezgida tameqrant') and the neighbourhood mosques set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Driouch follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The high latitude (~35.0° N) and the eastern position give Driouch prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. The Rif hills frame the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Driouch is organised around its grand mosque and a few neighbourhood mosques.
The town's grand mosque ('tamezgida tameqrant' in Rifian, 'the great mosque'), the main place of prayer.
