Geography & context
Figuig (فكيك), or Fjij, is a large oasis in the far south-east of Morocco, in the Oriental region, on the Algerian border. Located at roughly 32.11° north latitude and 1.23° west longitude, at about 900 metres of altitude, it has an arid desert climate: scorching summers, cold winter nights, a palm grove irrigated by springs. Made up of several ksour and renowned for its dates and octagonal minarets, Figuig sees its desert climate give its prayer times very sharp solar markers.
History & religious heritage
Figuig is a very ancient oasis, formed of several ksour (fortified villages: Zenaga, El Oudaghir, etc.) around a vast palm grove fed by springs. A stop on the trans-Saharan caravans, it is famous for its octagonal stone minarets, a form rare in Morocco, and for its scholarly and Sufi tradition (including the presence of the Darqawa path). Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh (Zenata) setting.
Religious life in Feguig
Religious life in Figuig is deeply marked by the tradition of the ksour and the zawiyas, within the Maliki and Sufi framework. Each ksar has its mosque(s), often old, with their characteristic octagonal minarets. The Friday prayer and Ramadan take on a strong communal dimension here, carried by an old attachment to religious learning. The Darqawa Sufi path is present.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Figuig follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. Under the clear, dry desert sky, crescent observation is often made easier. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~32.1° N) and the desert climate give Figuig prayer times with very sharp solar markers, under a clear sky, with a moderate seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:15 and Maghrib around 17:25; in summer, under extreme heat, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the far east of the country, the oasis has some of the earliest sunrises and sunsets in Morocco. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
In Figuig, each ksar has its mosques, often old and recognisable by their octagonal minarets. Here are some of the most notable places.
