Geography & context
Ferkhana (فرخانة) is a town of the Guelaya peninsula, in the Oriental region (province of Nador), near Nador, Beni Ensar and the Melilla enclave. Located at roughly 35.29° north latitude and 2.98° west longitude, on the Mediterranean near the Marchica lagoon, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers, mild winters. A Rifian town in the orbit of the Nador conurbation, Ferkhana sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ferkhana is a town of the Guelaya peninsula, in Rif country, within the sphere of the Nador conurbation and near Melilla. Long a farming and fishing town, it urbanised with the growth of Nador. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within a Rifian Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Ferkhana
Religious life in Ferkhana combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Rifian Berber identity. The town's mosques — several 'tamezgida' — set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents, fishermen and farmers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ferkhana follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.3° N) give Ferkhana prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:00 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The Mediterranean horizon offers a sharp marker for Maghrib. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
