Geography & context
Fezouane (فزوان) is a town in the foothills of the Beni Snassen, in the Oriental region (province of Berkane), near Berkane. Located at roughly 34.91° north latitude and 2.21° west longitude, at the foot of the mountains, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild winters, hot summers. An agricultural Amazigh town of the Beni Snassen, Fezouane sees its high latitude and eastern position give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Fezouane is a locality in the foothills of the Beni Snassen, in Amazigh country, long devoted to mountain agriculture (olive and citrus trees) and pastoralism. Near Berkane, it is part of the agricultural Triffa region. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh setting.
Religious life in Fezouane
Religious life in Fezouane combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Beni Snassen. The town mosque and the douar mosques — one of them a 'tamezgida' — set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together farmers and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Fezouane follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The high latitude (~34.9° N) and the eastern position give Fezouane prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:05 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The Beni Snassen relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
