Geography & context
Guercif (جرسيف) is a town of north-eastern Morocco, a provincial seat in the Oriental region, on the Moulouya plain, at the confluence of the Moulouya and the Melloulou. Located at roughly 34.24° north latitude and 3.35° west longitude, in an agricultural plain, it has a semi-arid continental climate: cool winters, very hot summers. A rail and road crossroads on the Fès–Oujda axis, Guercif sees its latitude and eastern position give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Guercif is a crossroads town of the Moulouya plain, on the main route linking Fès to Oujda, developed around agriculture (olives, cereals) and the railway. Its position at the eastern outlet of the Taza gap made it an important relay. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Guersif
Religious life in Guercif sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the grand mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques, including an old one at the heart of the town. The Friday prayer brings together farmers, railway staff and residents. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension. Several mosques bear the names of the Prophet's companions or evoke piety and sincerity.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Guercif follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~34.2° N) and the eastern position give Guercif prayer times with a marked seasonal swing, under a continental climate. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, under strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:10 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. Located in the east of the country, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Guercif has many mosques, including an old one at the heart of the town. Here are some of the most notable.
