Geography & context
Melilla (مليلية) is a city on the Mediterranean coast of northern Morocco, on the Guelaya peninsula, under Spanish administration and claimed by Morocco. Located at roughly 35.29° north latitude and 2.94° west longitude, surrounded by the territory of the province of Nador, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers, mild winters. A port city with a partly Muslim population, Melilla sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Melilla is a port city of the Rif coast, whose history is closely tied to that of its Moroccan hinterland. Its population includes a large Muslim community, mostly of Rifian Amazigh origin, which practises Maliki Islam there. Morocco claims the city. The religious practice of Melilla's Muslims follows the Moroccan Maliki rite.
Religious life in Melilla
The religious life of Melilla's Muslims sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, shared with the neighbouring Rif. The central mosque and other places of worship welcome the faithful for the daily and Friday prayers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension by the city's Muslim population.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As across all of northern Morocco, the Hijri calendar followed by Melilla's Muslims is set by rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, the Moroccan reference schedule shifts all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.3° N) give Melilla prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:00 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The Mediterranean horizon offers a sharp marker for Maghrib. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
