Geography & context
Missour (ميسور) is a small town of the Moulouya valley, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Boulemane), on the high plains east of the Middle Atlas. Located at roughly 33.05° north latitude and 3.99° west longitude, at about 960 metres of altitude, it has a semi-arid continental climate: cold winters, very hot summers. A stopover on the axis linking the Middle Atlas to the Oriental, Missour sees its latitude and altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Missour is a stopover town of the upper Moulouya, long devoted to pastoralism and the agriculture of the steppe plains. Its position as a crossroads between the Middle Atlas, the Tafilalet and the Oriental made it a trade relay. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within an Amazigh and Arab setting.
Religious life in Missour
Religious life in Missour sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, carried by the old mosque and a network of neighbourhood mosques. The Friday prayer brings together residents and herders of the plains. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension, characteristic of the small inland towns.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Missour follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~33.0° N), the altitude and the continental climate give Missour prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:15 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, under strong heat, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 21:50–22:15 depending on the method. Located in the east of the country, the town has earlier sunrises and sunsets than the west. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
Notable mosques
Missour has several mosques, including an old one at the heart of the town. Here are the most notable.
'Al-Masjid al-Atiq' ('the old mosque') is among the town's oldest sanctuaries.
