Geography & context
Moulay Yacoub (مولاي يعقوب) is a small spa town in northern Morocco, in the Fès-Meknès region, about twenty kilometres north-west of Fès. Located at roughly 34.08° north latitude and 5.18° west longitude, on hills, it has a Mediterranean climate: mild, humid winters, hot summers. Famous for its sulphurous hot springs and its spa resort, Moulay Yacoub sees its latitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Moulay Yacoub takes its name from a venerated saint and owes its fame to its hot sulphurous springs, long used for their curative virtues. The spa draws visitors from all over the country. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite, within the Moroccan tradition of veneration of the saints.
Religious life in Moulay Yaâgoub
Religious life in Moulay Yacoub sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition, associated with the memory of the saint who gave the town its name. The mosque of the centre and the neighbourhood mosques gather residents and spa visitors for the daily and Friday prayers. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Moulay Yacoub follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The latitude (~34.1° N) gives Moulay Yacoub prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:25 and Maghrib around 17:45; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 22:00–22:25 depending on the method. Its times are very close to those of nearby Fès. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
