Geography & context
Ras El Ma (رأس الماء), or Cap de l'Eau, is a fishing village on the Mediterranean coast of the Oriental (province of Nador), near the mouth of the Moulouya and the Algerian border. Located at roughly 35.13° north latitude and 2.43° west longitude, between sea and lagoon, it has a Mediterranean climate: hot summers, mild winters. A small fishing port and holiday spot, Ras El Ma sees its very high latitude give its prayer times a strong seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ras El Ma ('the head of the water'), also called Cap de l'Eau, is a fishing village of the eastern coast, near the mouth of the Moulouya. Its coves and beaches make it a summer holiday spot, in an Amazigh region (Kebdana). Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Ras Lma
Religious life in Ras El Ma sits within the Maliki Islamic tradition of the Oriental, carried by the village mosque and an old mosque. The Friday prayer brings together fishermen, residents and summer visitors. Ramadan is lived with a strong communal dimension, typical of the coastal villages.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ras El Ma follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The Mediterranean position and the very high latitude (~35.1° N) give Ras El Ma prayer times with a strong seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:30; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:00 and Isha around 22:00–22:30 depending on the method. The Mediterranean horizon offers a sharp marker for Maghrib. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
