Geography & context
Ribate El Kheir (رباط الخير), also called Ahermoumou, is a mountain town of the Middle Atlas, in the Fès-Meknès region (province of Sefrou). Located at roughly 33.82° north latitude and 4.42° west longitude, on the wooded heights of the Middle Atlas, it has a mountain climate: cold winters, cool summers. An Amazigh town (Aït Youssi) surrounded by forests, Ribate El Kheir sees its altitude give its prayer times a marked seasonal swing.
History & religious heritage
Ribate El Kheir, whose Amazigh name is Ahermoumou, is a mountain town of the Middle Atlas, in Aït Youssi country. Its Arabic name ('the ribat of good') evokes the ribats, those fortified posts with a religious vocation in Muslim history. The town lives from pastoralism, the forest and mountain agriculture. Religious practice here follows the Maliki rite.
Religious life in Ribate El Kheïr
Religious life in Ribate El Kheir combines the Maliki Islamic tradition with the Amazigh identity of the Aït Youssi. The mosques of the town and the douars set the rhythm of daily life. The Friday prayer brings together residents and villagers. Ramadan, often lived in the cold of the altitude, keeps a strong communal dimension.
Hijri calendar & local specifics
As everywhere in Morocco, the Hijri calendar in Ribate El Kheir follows rukyat, the official sighting of the crescent moon announced by the Ministry of Habous. This method can produce a one-day difference from the Saudi calendar, notably for Ramadan and the two Eids. During Ramadan, Morocco suspends summer time, shifting all prayer times by about an hour for the duration of the month.
Climate & effect on prayer times
The mountain altitude and the latitude (~33.8° N) give Ribate El Kheir prayer times with a marked seasonal swing. In winter, Fajr is observed around 06:20 and Maghrib around 17:40; in summer, Fajr falls around 04:15 and Isha around 21:55–22:25 depending on the method. The wooded Middle Atlas relief frames the horizon. The published times follow the Ministry of Habous method.
